Job Description
Liaise with the Chief Executive Officer , Finance Coordinator and other relevant staff , committee members and/or volunteers to ensure the financial viability of the organization .
Make fellow committee members aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data to them.
Regularly report the financial position at committee meetings (balance sheet, cash flow, fundraising performance etc.) .
Oversee the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year.
Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls
Others as appropriate
Appraising the financial viability of plans , proposals and feasibility studies .
Lead on appointing and liaising with auditors/an independent examiner.
To ensure that the organization complies with its governing document “Articles of
Association” , and any relevant legislation or regulations , including charities
legislation .
To ensure that the organization pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document.
To ensure the organization applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives.
The organization must not spend money on activities which are not included in its own objectives, (no matter how worthwhile or charitable those activities are) .
To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees ' role in giving f irm strategic
direction to the organization , setting overall policy , defining goals , setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets .
To safeguard the good name and values of the organization.
To represent the company at functions and meetings as appropriate.
To declare any conflict of interest while carrying out the duties of a trustee.
To be collectively responsible for the actions of the organization along with other trustees.
To ensure the effective and efficient administration of the organization.
To ensure the financial stability of the organization.
To protect and manage the property of the organization and to ensure the proper investment of the charity’s funds.
To make sure the organization is properly insured against all reasonable liabilities .
To contribute to the appointment and ongoing development and support of staff,
including performance monitoring, where appropriate of members of the senior management team.
To work in accordance with OSCR good practice guidance.

This will involve :
Scrutinizing board papers
Leading discussions
Focusing on key issues
Providing guidance on new initiatives
Attend meetings , and to read papers in advance of meetings
Attend sub-group meetings as appropriate
Participate in other tasks as arise from time to time , such as interviewing senior managers , helping with fundraising
Keep informed about the activities of the organization and wider issues which affect its work
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Trustees have overall responsibility for the affairs of the Students ’ Union . In line
with Scottish Charity Law, they ensure that SAUWS conducts its affairs in line with
its charitable objects and delivers for its members.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge and experience of charity fundraising and finance practices. Dedicated to the organization’s cause and objectives and willing to act as the charity’s ambassador to external bodies, charities and companies. Skills and experience in one or more areas of non-executive governance and management e.g. strategic planning , business management , financial/accountancy , understanding of HR issues , experience of Trusts or other grant giving bodies particularly fundraising and legal knowledge . A team-oriented approach to problem solving and to management.
